My First Book
The Great New Zealand Sausage Trail & Other Meaty Stories
Plus: A Tale from Three Cities
One Monday morning in 2005, Bob Deans woke up in his home in Warkworth, and said to his long-suffering and ever-patient wife, Jean, ‘Let’s create The Great New Zealand Sausage Trail!” She looked at him and nodded. That was all the approval retired butcher Bob, who had been in The Meat Game since the 50s, needed.
Five days later, they set off on a Sausage Odyssey that was to take them from Kaitaia in the north to Invercargill in the South, visiting butcher shops, speaking to butchers, and sampling sausages! The idea was to set up a website and encourage people to ‘follow the sausage’!

The Meat Game!
In this book, Bob recounts this story and many other ‘meaty stories’ from his long career in The Meat Game. His ‘Meaty’ Journey went from Arbroath in Scotland to Canada, back to Scotland, to Australia, and ended at Sensational Sausages in Orakei, Auckland.
His anecdotes, from spilling the blood intended for Black Pudding when he crashed his delivery bike at the age of 10, to his brief foray into farming near Warkworth on retirement, are recounted in typically dry, often self-deprecating, mildly sarcastic Glaswegian humour.
Also included in the book is the short story, A Tale from Three Cities, which recounts the Deans family – four kids under the age of 11 – journey to Edmonton in Canada in 1953.
The book is endearingly illustrated with Bob’s own naive line drawings.
