Welcome to The Meat Game!
Bob made his debut as a participant in The Meat Game at the age of 1o. After school and on weekends, he would mount the delivery bike, with wooden blocks attached to the pedals so that he could reach them, and dash off around the town of Arbroath in Scotland, delivering meat from his Dad’s butcher shop. This book records some of the many adventures and interesting people met along the way during more than 30 years in The Meat Game, culminating the ultimate adventure – The Great New Zealand Sausage Trail!.
The story of
Bob Deans & The Meat Game
Bob was born in Glasgow in 1942, to Thomas Deans and Eliza Deans (nee Garland), when his Dad was in the Royal Air Force at Biggin Hill. His Mum was a bookbinder.
He recalls: “.Dad was stationed at Biggin Hill during the Battle of Britain keeping Spitfires and Hurricanes in the air.
By the time the war was over I was the eldest of three children living in a single end accomodation in a Glasgow tenement, sharing a toilet on the landing with two other families, no hot water or bathroom – just like thousands of other Glasgow families. After the war dad borrowed enough money from family and friends to buy a butcher’s shop and we moved to Arbroath on Scotland’s east coast.
